The story

Combine the many tricks and styles of the extreme sport, inline skating, with a Tony Hawk style system, complete with objectives and huge arenas, and you have Aggressive Inline. Progress through the career mode, where you must complete objectives (such as grind a certain object(s) to jump over large gaps and gain points) to open up further arenas, which there are 7 in all, and once your bored with them, you can make your own in the park editor. The game doesn't use a hard time limit but the so-called "juice meter": it fills up when performing stunts and if it gets empty, the level ends. During the game you level up your character in seven stats, e.g. speed and grinds. The game uses a "learning by doing" approach to this, meaning that the stat improves if you perform the associated actions often enough. There are also five hidden keys in each level which open up new areas within the level.

What it’s like

Aggressive Inline is a fast, gritty skate-arena game, and its look leans on early-2000s extreme-sport grime: real-photo box art, polygonal 3D skaters in saturated, sun-washed urban and industrial arenas, and an overlay of punk and rock licensed tracks that thumps through every grind. Its vibe is loud, kinetic and a little rough around the edges, the kind of thing to play in a bright, restless evening session or on a split-screen couch with a friend. Pacing is brisk and score-driven, with a "juice meter" that drains whenever you stop pulling tricks, so the rhythm is constant motion and tension rather than calm exploration. Its emotional register is competitive bravado and gleeful showing-off; the arc is simply a rookie climbing stat by stat through practice until the arenas open up. Intensity is moderate: there is cartoonish bloodiness and a few crashes, plus a cheat-code culture and, in the game's own tags, an animal cruelty element, so it is not a gentle pick. It suits fans of fast arcade trick games who enjoy learning by repetition and hunting for hidden shortcuts.
