The story
NHL 96 was the first EA Sports game to feature Virtual Stadium technology, which resulted in a 3D feel and multiple camera angles. The NHL license ensures that real teams and players of the era are included, with a full league and playoff system. Many game options can be toggled - the infamous fighting is option, as are the penalties and offsides. The control system makes it possible to execute one-touch passes, and several special trick moves to quickly advance the ball. As a bonus feature, it included 'Hockey Card' profiles of every player on CD, and interviews with the stars of the game.
What it’s like
Bright, flat arena lighting over glossy white ice, with the blue and red sweater colours sharp against it, and a camera that swings between a high broadcast angle and a lower, closer view that makes the rink feel like a real building with a crowd noise bed under everything. The Virtual Stadium presentation gives the 1995 look its three-dimensional depth, though the figures are chunky and pixel-stepped, a period texture that reads as warm rather than dated. Sound is the buzz of skates, the hard clack of a slapshot off the boards, and an organ-and-horn sports-broadcast rhythm that loops comfortably over a long session. Pacing is quick and volatile: play surges up and down the ice, and the one-touch passing and trick moves let a match run in short bursts of tension. Emotional register is competitive but light, with no lingering weight, and the fighting, penalties and offsides can be switched on or off so the intensity can be dialled from a clean skate to scuffling scrums. Fighting appears only as an optional toggle, and when it is on it is cartoonish rather than brutal. Good for sports fans who want a full season or playoff run, for split-screen nights with a friend, and for anyone nostalgic for the early nineties arcade-sim feel.
