The story
NHL 09 is the 17th video game in the NHL series released by EA Sports in 2008. Both the Nintendo DS and Wii versions had been planned, but canceled. It was the last installment of the NHL series to be released on Playstation 2 and the last to get a PC release
What it’s like
Bright arena lighting and crisp, saturated jerseys over glossy ice, with broadcast-style camera angles that swing low behind the net and pull wide across the blue line. The presentation leans on the look of a televised game: pre-game tunnel shots, a roaring crowd that rises and falls with every shift, and the squeal of skates and thunk of boards cutting through the arena hum. Menus are clean and functional, with licensed team colours and player faces that read clearly at a glance. The vibe is energetic but unhurried, a comfortable sports-night feel suited to a weekend afternoon, a season-mode session stretched across evenings, or a friendly game with a friend on the couch. Pacing follows the flow of a real match, with stoppages, line changes and fast breakaways alternating in a steady rhythm, and the emotional register is competitive and light: wins feel earned, losses sting without lingering. Violence is limited to body checks and scrums, with no gore, no sexual content and no cruelty; the intensity is the adrenaline of a close third period. It suits sports fans and hockey devotees who want to play their own season, and anyone who enjoys the tactile satisfaction of a well-timed one-timer.
