The story

When the magic powers of The Tablet of Ahkmenrah begin to die out, Larry Daley spans the globe, uniting favorite and new characters while embarking on an epic quest to save the magic before it is gone forever.

What it’s like

Bright, busy studio comedy-adventure lighting: exhibit halls glow under warm tungsten and electric-blue spotlights, with the cavernous museum interiors rendered in saturated, slightly glossy digital colour, and the globe-trotting leg sweeping through sun-baked Egyptian ruins, London rooftops and a dusky Smithsonian-style storage vault. Camerawork is fast and playful, with quick cuts, wide establishing shots of sprawling sets and plenty of physical-comedy close-ups, while the score is brassy, orchestral and bouncy, swelling into adventure-movie fanfares. The vibe is light, nostalgic and busy: giddy family fun with a warm, goofy edge, well suited to a weekend afternoon, a family movie night or a sit-back watch when you want something bright and undemanding. Pacing is brisk and episodic, the emotional register sunny and sentimental, and the central arc follows a nervous night watchman who learns to lead, with his friendships with his museum companions rising to the fore. Intensity is low: some slapstick mishaps, mild peril and a few cartoonish fights, with no gore and no sexual content. It is for families and anyone who wants a gentle, good-humoured adventure with a fond, cosy feel.
