The story
The forest of Nibel is dying. After a powerful storm sets a series of devastating events in motion, an unlikely hero must journey to find his courage and confront a dark nemesis to save his home. Ori and the Blind Forest tells the tale of a young orphan destined for heroics, through a visually stunning action-platformer crafted by Moon Studios for Xbox One and PC. Featuring hand-painted artwork, meticulously animated character performance, and a fully orchestrated score, Ori and the Blind Forest explores a deeply emotional story about love and sacrifice, and the hope that exists in us all.
What it’s like
Luminous hand-painted forests drift through every frame, with watercolour-soft backdrops, glowing spirit light, and creatures animated with a fluid, almost puppet-like warmth. Bioluminescent blues and greens bloom against deep shadowed roots, and the world shifts toward ashen grey and sickly rot as the trees die, so the palette itself carries the sadness. The orchestral score swells with strings and choir in the quieter passages and drops to hushed, aching melody when the land is still. Movement is quick and precise: double jumps, wall climbs, and dashes that feel springy under the thumbs, with a steady rhythm of challenge and breathing room. The mood is wistful and tender, bittersweet rather than bleak, touched with real dread during the chases and boss encounters. Violence is stylised and mostly abstract, with menacing creatures and a few tense, sudden moments, though no gore. It suits a rainy evening with a controller, or an absorbing late-night session, for players who love emotional, painterly adventures and tight platforming with a sorrowful heart.
