The story
Ostriv is a city-building game that puts you in a role of a governor of an 18th century Ukrainian town to challenge your creative skills and management abilities. Ostriv aims to raise the bar of city-building experience by adding a huge amount of possibilities and removing annoying limitations. It allows for truly organic town layouts without the grid and angle restrictions on a three-dimensional landscape. The goal is to make player's creations to become alive and believable communities where real-life problems would arise, thus making the late game a new challenge rather than a repetitive chore.
What it’s like
Soft, painterly isometric views of a river valley, with hand-drawn rooftops, timber houses and dirt lanes that bend around hills instead of snapping to a grid. The palette runs to muted earth tones, washed greens and dusty ochre, with warm daylight that turns amber at dusk and lanterns that glow in the evening. Sound is a gentle bed of birdsong, creaking carts, distant water wheels and hammering from workshops, with a quiet folk-inflected score that rises and falls in long unhurried phrases. Pacing is slow and contemplative: you lay out a settlement at your own speed, nudging paths, orchards and mills into place, then watch small pressures build as families, food and trade shift over seasons. The tone is cozy with a thread of quiet anxiety, a sense of responsibility rather than panic, and there is no combat or gore; the tension is about shortages, sickness and unrest rather than violence. It suits a rainy afternoon, a long evening alone, or a patient session with a cup of tea. It is for people who enjoy designing a place with room to breathe, who like systems that feel like real communities, and who prefer creative problem-solving to frantic optimisation.
