The story

Panchayat is a comedy-drama, which captures the journey of an engineering graduate Abhishek, who for lack of a better job option joins as secretary of a panchayat office in a remote village of Uttar Pradesh. Stuck between crazy villagers and a difficult village lifestyle Abhishek starts his job with the sole motivation of getting out of there as soon as possible, for which he even prepares for CAT.

What it’s like

Warm, unhurried daylight spills across dusty courtyards, mud-brick walls and the sun-faded green of a village panchayat office, with the camera mostly staying still and letting ordinary rooms and faces hold the frame. The sound is low-key: rural ambience of wind, chickens and distant voices, a light acoustic score that surfaces only at small emotional turns. The mood is gentle, wry and easygoing, a cozy comedy with a soft satirical edge about local politics and bureaucracy, the kind that suits a lazy weekend, a comfort rewatch, or an evening with a cup of chai. Its rhythm is conversational and episodic, with deadpan exchanges and running jokes that build into genuine affection. The central arc follows a restless young city-educated clerk who arrives reluctant and gradually softens toward the village and its eccentric residents. Intensity is very low: some raised voices and mild embarrassment, with no violence, gore or sexual content. It is for viewers who want humour that is kind, observational and grounded in everyday life, and who enjoy slow-burn character warmth more than plot twists.
