The story

A down and out cop lands the case of a lifetime when four suspects are nabbed in the assassination attempt of a prime time journalist. The case turns out to be a devious maze where nothing is what it looks like. The pursuit of it leads him to the dark netherworld - the 'Paatal Lok', and to shocking discoveries in the past of the four suspects.

What it’s like

Muted, sweat-streaked Delhi in harsh daylight and sodium-orange dusk: cramped police quarters, dim tea stalls, rain-slick lanes and fluorescent-lit interrogation rooms that feel airless and close. The camera stays close and handheld in tight corridors and crowded slums, then opens to hazy wide shots of the city's sprawl, so the viewer is always made to feel the grime and heat. Sound is mostly ambient city noise, traffic, shouted argument and distant prayer, with a sparse, brooding score that surfaces only at tense turns. The vibe is bleak, corrosive and quietly humane, the kind of slow-burning unease that suits a late night alone with the lights off. Pacing is deliberate, with long conversational scenes that let a worn-down investigator and his suspects reveal themselves through small gestures and silences. Violence is real and sometimes brutal, including beatings, torture and killings, with some sexual violence and frank abuse discussed on screen, and it lands with weight rather than spectacle. Themes of caste, communal hatred and the cruelty of institutions run throughout. Best for viewers who want gritty, morally complicated crime drama with a strong sense of place, and who can sit with heavy, uncomfortable material.
