The story

When Jack crosses paths with a woman from his past, he's not sure if it's love...or if she's a ruthless con artist using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth.

What it’s like

Warm, sun-saturated adventure with a rollicking, swashbuckling energy: bright tropical daylight over turquoise water, sepia-toned candlelit interiors aboard creaking galleons, and a wide, sweeping camera that loves masts, rigging and sea spray. Rob Marshall stages sword fights and ship-to-ship chases with big, legible choreography rather than frantic cutting, and the score swells with brass and strings whenever the action lifts. Night scenes lean on lantern glow, fog and moonlit surf, giving the mood a slightly eerie, fairy-tale edge, especially around the mermaid sequences. The vibe is playful, cheeky and escapist, a crowd-pleaser for a lazy weekend afternoon or a long-haul flight. Pacing is brisk and episodic, with a wry, bantering tone and a comic lead who stays a step ahead of everyone, circling a rivalry-tinged romance with a more earnest partner. Violence is frequent but cartoonish: sword duels, cannon fire and skirmishes with bloodless, stylised injuries, and a few tense moments of peril, including a sinister, dark-tinged mermaid sequence, but no gore and little real cruelty. It suits viewers who want a fun, funny, visually lavish adventure without anything bleak or graphic.
