The story

Pokemon HeartGold Version and Pokemon SoulSilver Version return players to the scenic Johto region first introduced in the beloved original Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver games nearly a decade ago. The richly detailed adventure of Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver is now enhanced for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi systems with updated graphics and sound, as well as new touch-screen features and a host of surprises. Pokemon HeartGold Version and Pokemon SoulSilver Version bring dozens of Pokemon characters back into the limelight for a new Pokemon generation - and longtime fans - to catch, train and battle.

What it’s like

Bright, cheerful pixel art on the Nintendo DS's small top screen, with the lower touch screen showing maps, Pokémon storage and the Pokétch gadget in crisp, toy-like detail. Johto's towns sit in soft daytime sunshine, with green routes, shaded forest paths and the warm gold and lilac glow of evening, and the day-night cycle changes what you see as you walk. The chiptune-style score is bouncy and nostalgic, its battle themes quick and bright, while the quieter town and route melodies loop gently under the walking. Pacing is unhurried and episodic: long stretches of exploration and catching punctuated by trainer battles, with a steady sense of progress through gym badges and small mysteries. The emotional register is warm, wholesome and low-stakes, with a light, affectionate tone toward its characters and creatures. Violence is absent; battles are turn-based contests between animal-like monsters that faint rather than suffer, with no gore, sexual content or real fear. Cozy and undemanding, it suits a rainy afternoon, a comfort replay, or a long train ride, and it is for players who want gentle, nostalgic adventure with a satisfying loop of collecting and training.
