The story

Portal Stories: Mel is a community made, free modification for Portal 2 based in the Portal universe. It tells the story of Mel, who meets a new personality core and faces an undiscovered threat to the Aperture facility.

What it’s like

Clean, sterile test chambers in cool white light, with the faint hum of Aperture machinery and the bright blue and orange glow of portal surfaces against grey concrete and steel. The art direction stays close to Valve's Portal 2 look: fluorescent-lit corridors, glassed-in observation rooms, and the occasional bleak outdoor stretch, all rendered in a crisp, slightly worn sci-fi palette. Sound leans on the familiar electronic chimes of portal placement, low ambient machinery drone, and the dry, deadpan voice of a personality core keeping up a steady stream of quips. Puzzles are the main rhythm: short bursts of thought, a stretch of testing and trial, then a quiet moment of click as the solution lands. The vibe is wry, low-key curiosity with a faint undercurrent of unease, well suited to an evening of puzzle-solving at a desk or a few focused sessions on a laptop. Its emotional register is light and self-aware, with a new companion slowly finding their footing inside an unsettling facility. There is no gore; any danger is cartoonish, mostly fall damage and turrets that clatter and fizzle rather than wound. It suits players who enjoy gravity-based puzzles, dry humour, and the mood of Portal without needing to finish the original games first.
