The story

Rage of Mages II: Necromancer (known as Allods 2: Master of Souls in Russia) is the sequel to the original Rage of Mages. It is an RTS/RPG hybrid.

What it’s like

Viewed from a high isometric angle, the game lays out its medieval fantasy lands as painted-looking terrain of greens, browns and stone greys, with units rendered as small animated sprites that crowd the screen during skirmishes. The mood is focused and industrious: long stretches of scouting, managing towns and resources, and tending a single hero's growth, broken by battles that rise into busy clashes of troops. Its rhythm is deliberate and turn-by-turn in spirit, with pauses to plan and a steady sense of accumulation as the protagonist gains power and the stakes rise. Violence is fantasy warfare handled at a distance, with cavalry charges, spells and unit deaths rather than close-up gore, and the dread comes from grim necromantic themes more than from anything graphic. Vibe: a brooding, studious medieval campaign with a dusty, old-PC charm. It suits a slow weekend afternoon, a long evening with a notebook of strategies, or a stretch of thoughtful play between busier days. It is for players who enjoy the tension of planning a campaign, growing a hero alongside an army, and the satisfaction of a well-timed battle.
