The story
A psychological horror point-and-click adventure game in which a man wakes up in a near-deserted sanitarium after a car crash without any recollection of who he is or how he got there.
What it’s like
Sanitarium's world is hand-painted and storybook-strange: pre-rendered backgrounds in muted greens, sickly yellows and washed-out blues, with twisted architecture, rotting corridors and surreal dreamscapes that shift between clinical white-tiled wards and fleshy, organic nightmare spaces. Its soundtrack leans on eerie, sparse melodies, creaking doors and distant whispers, with the occasional unsettling song breaking the quiet. The mood is uneasy and dreamlike, a slow-burning psychological dread closer to a bad fever than a jump-scare, best suited to a late evening alone with headphones or a rainy afternoon when you want something puzzling and atmospheric. Pacing is deliberate, built around exploring, reading notes, solving object-based puzzles and wandering through mazes, with the tension coming from a protagonist slowly piecing together his identity and the unsettling reality around him. Intensity is moderate: there is blood and some grisly imagery, ghostly apparitions and a constant sense of insanity, but little that is explicitly gory or sexual, and the dread accumulates more than it explodes. It suits adventure fans who enjoy classic point-and-click puzzling and players who like their horror cerebral, strange and quietly disturbing rather than relentless.
