The story

What it’s like
Bright, hand-drawn anime-style animation that borrows the comic's flat color blocks, speech-bubble captions and onomatopoeic sound effects, so every frame reads like a page turning in motion. Palettes run loud and saturated, with pink, electric blue and neon-yellow flashes during fights, and softer pastel daylight over Toronto's streets and apartments. Its sound is a constant rush of chiptune-tinged rock and bright synth, punctuated by cartoon pops and bass drops. The vibe is giddy, self-aware and kinetic, the energy of a Saturday-morning cartoon crossed with an indie-band gig. Pacing is brisk and gag-heavy, with fights that bounce between video-game beats and quick cuts, and comic pauses that let the characters' awkward, hopeful romance breathe. The emotional register is sweet and funny, following a young slacker slowly learning to face his own immaturity and past relationships. Violence is cartoonish and frequent: punches, kicks and fights that end in coin showers and puffs of light, with no real gore. Some romance and mild innuendo, with bisexuality present in the cast. It suits a weekend binge, a spirited comfort rewatch, or a playful mood when you want something colorful and light. It is for viewers who love comic-book energy, video-game nostalgia and offbeat, big-hearted romcoms.
