The story
As an asteroid nears Earth, a man finds himself alone after his wife leaves in a panic. He decides to take a road trip to reunite with his high school sweetheart. Accompanying him is a neighbor who inadvertently puts a wrench in his plan.
What it’s like
Warm, wistful and quietly funny, with the washed-out pastel palette of a suburban apocalypse: pale blue skies, cluttered beige kitchens, sun-faded highways and motel rooms lit by flickering lamps. The camera stays close and unhurried, often holding on faces during pauses, so the humour lands in small reactions rather than set pieces. Its score is soft acoustic and indie pop that drifts in and out, and long stretches of road are filled with ambient quiet. The mood is melancholy with a hopeful undertow, a cozy-bittersweet road movement that suits a rainy Sunday or a late evening alone. Its intensity is low: there is no violence, and the sense of doom stays in the background as strangers grieve, drink, and wander. Its people's arcs follow a guarded man and a restless neighbour slowly loosening up, opening toward connection while time runs out. Romance and friendship are gentle and grounded, and the tone is mostly tender, with some frank adult talk and a few drug and sex references. It is for people who want a soft, funny, sad-sweet companion picture about finding someone to be with at the end.
