The story

Sengoku Rance (also known as "Rance 7") is the tenth release of the Rance series launched by Alicesoft. The story takes place during the 4th sengoku (warring states) era of JAPAN, an area of the Rance World which parodies medieval real-world Japan.

What it’s like

Bright anime character portraits sit over painted feudal-Japan backdrops, with text boxes doing most of the work and the screen changing mostly when someone speaks or a battle grid opens. The mood is loud, bawdy and cheerful, with a parody sensibility that treats samurai, ninja and warlord posturing as an excuse for slapstick. Turn-based tactical battles break up the reading in chunks, and the pace is brisk, with long stretches of dialogue ending in sudden punchlines. Its emotional register is irreverent comedy with a sour edge: an anti-hero protagonist who is selfish and unapologetic, and a cast whose arcs turn on scheming, rivalry and grudging alliance rather than tenderness. Intensity is high. The game contains explicit sexual content and nudity throughout, plus frequent cruelty, murder and character deaths, some played for laughs and some not. It is not gentle, and it is not quiet. It suits adult players who want a raucous, irreverent sengoku-era romp for long late-night sessions, and fans of tactical RPG mechanics who don't mind their comedy crude.
