The story

Claude and Marie Verneuil face a new crisis. The four spouses of their daughters, David, Rachid, Chao and Charles decided to leave France for various reasons. Here they are imagining their lives elsewhere.

What it’s like

Bright, broad, sun-drenched French comedy staged in ordinary family spaces: a Parisian apartment and a string of wide, postcard-bright locations shot in clean daylight, with warm ochres and saturated blues that feel like a holiday brochure with a sitcom's blocking. The camera stays mostly conventional and static, favouring two-shots and reaction close-ups over anything stylised, and the score is upbeat and light, with pop-tinged accordion-era cheer that never tips into sentiment. The vibe is cheerful, chaotic and affectionate, a Sunday-afternoon crowd-pleaser for a lazy afternoon or a relaxed group night in. Pacing is brisk and episodic, built on escalating bickering and running gags, and the emotional register stays warm and teasing even when the subject turns to prejudice; the arc is a bickering older couple slowly accepting that their in-laws and children want different lives. Intensity is low: some raised voices, pratfalls and mild slapstick, no real violence, no gore, nothing frightening, though the racist remarks aimed at the characters are a recurring, sharp-edged source of laughs. For people who want a light, familiar comedy about family friction and cultural clashes, with nothing harsher than a squabble.
