The story

Buster and his new cast now have their sights set on debuting a new show at the Crystal Tower Theater in glamorous Redshore City. But with no connections, he and his singers must sneak into the Crystal Entertainment offices, run by the ruthless wolf mogul Jimmy Crystal, where the gang pitches the ridiculous idea of casting the lion rock legend Clay Calloway in their show. Buster must embark on a quest to find the now-isolated Clay and persuade him to return to the stage.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated animation with glossy digital surfaces and a sugary palette of hot pinks, teal and gold, most of it set in the glittering neon-and-chrome city of Redshore, where the light always feels like stage light. The camera swoops and cuts with quick, bouncy energy during the musical numbers, while quieter scenes settle into warm, softly lit rooms and dusty roads. The score is a loud pop-and-rock jukebox of covers sung by the animal cast, so sound is never far from the foreground. Its vibe is upbeat, big-hearted and cheerfully chaotic, a feel-good caper for a family movie night or a lighthearted watch on a weekend afternoon. Pacing is brisk and rhythmic, with the story lurching from one set piece to the next. The emotional register stays warm and comic, following a flamboyant, eager impresario slowly learning to trust his crew and a fading star wrestling with his self-doubt. Peril is cartoonish and mild, with slapstick scuffles and a menacing mogul who is more blustery than frightening, and there is no gore or sexual content. It suits families, young children and anyone wanting a gentle, sing-along escape.
