The story

After getting stranded on Earth, Sonic and his friends team up with 12-year-old Chris Thorndyke to collect all the Chaos Emeralds and defeat the evil Dr. Eggman.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated cel animation with clean outlines and flat, primary-colored skies, the kind of look that belongs to a Saturday morning in the early 2000s. Suburban streets, shopping arcades and sun-drenched city parks sit beside alien ruins and glowing green Chaos Emerald effects, so the palette swings from sugary pastel to sudden flashes of neon energy. Pacing is brisk and episodic, with a cheerful comedic bounce in every scene, quick cuts and a lot of running, and the score is upbeat synth-pop and orchestral stingers that keep the energy high. Intensity is low to moderate: there are fights and explosions, but they are cartoonish, bloodless and quickly resolved, and the menace from Dr. Eggman is more bluster than real dread. Emotionally the show is warm and goofy, centred on a lonely kid finding a found family among eccentric friends, with easy humor and a little wistful homesickness. It suits a lazy weekend morning, a comfort rewatch, or background viewing for anyone who wants gentle, lighthearted adventure, and it's especially fitting for fans of the games who want a playful, nostalgic take on the franchise.
