The story
Set in the Shinigami technical school for weapon meisters, the series revolves around 3 groups of each a weapon meister and a human weapon. Trying to make the latter a "Death Scythe" which is the highest title for a weapon and thus fit for use by the Shinigami, they must collect the souls of 99 evil humans and 1 witch. Maka & Soul Eater, Black Star & Tsubaki, and Death the Kid with Patty and Liz Thompson are the characters Soul Eater revolves around. Besides taking the time to gather souls, these students of Shibusen defend Death City from some of the most powerful of creatures while still attending school and trying to become stronger.
What it’s like
Bold, saturated colour and exaggerated, elastic animation give this anime a loud, graphic energy, with gothic Art Deco towers, moonlit rooftops and sudden flares of red and violet during fights. Its soundtrack leans on jazzy, rock-tinged cues that swing between cheeky and ominous, and the rhythm is brisk: slapstick school-life gags give way to sharp, stylised battles and back again. The vibe is playful gothic chaos with a dark undertow, best suited to a weekend binge or a lively comfort rewatch. Violence is frequent and cartoonishly exaggerated but not sanitised, with blood, impalements and monstrous creatures, while the sexual content is minimal and the fear is mostly theatrical. The emotional register is warm and goofy, anchored by friendships and partnerships that grow steadily more loyal, with each character's arc built around self-belief and earning respect. It suits viewers who enjoy action comedy with a macabre streak, and who want stylish fights and quirky cast chemistry rather than quiet, gentle viewing.
