The story
Spelunky (also known as Spelunky HD) is a remake of Spelunky (now known as Spelunky Classic), an open source indie platformer video game created by Derek Yu and originally released as freeware for Microsoft Windows. The player controls a spelunker who explores a series of caves while collecting treasure, saving damsels, fighting enemies and dodging traps. The caves are procedurally generated, making each run through the game unique. Spelunky is one of the first examples of a roguelike-like, borrowing concepts from the roguelike genre, and was the influence for many later roguelike-like games.
What it’s like
Warm, pixel-sharp cave art in saturated earth tones: mossy browns, sulfur yellows, the cold blue of ice caves and the sickly purple of the temple depths, all rendered in crisp hand-drawn sprites with a bright, almost storybook readability. The camera sits at a fixed side-on distance, so every ledge and spike is legible at a glance, and the soundtrack shifts between jaunty chiptune cave themes and a tense, looping drum pulse that quickens as danger closes in. Each descent feels like stepping into a new cavern: procedurally generated layouts mean the rooms never repeat, so the mood changes with the rock formations and the lighting of each level. The vibe is brisk, funny and quietly stubborn, with plenty of sudden, slapstick deaths that land more like a joke than a wound. Violence is cartoonish and frequent, with spikes, bats, snakes and explosions sending the tiny explorer tumbling, but there is no blood or gore and nothing lingers. Pacing is tight: runs last a few minutes and restart instantly, so it suits short bursts on the couch, a handheld session on a commute, or a late evening of "one more try." It is built for players who enjoy learning a tricky system through failure, and for anyone who loves the tension of rolling the dice on a fresh, unpredictable map.
