The story

Struggling to find his place in the world while juggling school and family, Brooklyn teenager Miles Morales is unexpectedly bitten by a radioactive spider and develops unfathomable powers just like the one and only Spider-Man. While wrestling with the implications of his new abilities, Miles discovers a super collider created by the madman Wilson "Kingpin" Fisk, causing others from across the Spider-Verse to be inadvertently transported to his dimension.

What it’s like

Comic-book halftone dots, Ben-Day texture, and chromatic aberration spill across frames that shift between hand-drawn and CGI, so every scene looks like a page being flipped at speed. Palettes are saturated and electric: Brooklyn nights in deep blues and hot pinks, graffiti-splashed walls, sudden bursts of neon and comic-panel onomatopoeia. The camera swings and cuts with restless energy, yet the quieter moments of a teenager's bedroom, a crowded family kitchen, or a rain-slicked subway platform hold still long enough for warmth to surface. The score is hip-hop-inflected and buoyant, with bass-heavy drops that punctuate the action, and the rhythm is brisk, joyful, and funny, with a loose, gently self-aware humour. The vibe is kinetic and tender at once: exuberant, big-hearted, and full of playful experimentation. Its emotional core follows an awkward, unsure kid learning to trust himself, and a found family of mismatched heroes slowly coming together. Action is frequent and cartoonishly stylised, with punches, falls and explosions, but there is little gore and no sexual content; the peril feels bright rather than frightening. It suits a weekend afternoon, a comic-fan rewatch, or anyone who wants a dazzling, upbeat animated spectacle for all ages, especially people who love bold visual style.
