The story
Star Control II, the sequel to the original Star Control, is a space adventure game that features role-playing elements alongside a 2D space ship melee combat system. The player assumes the role of The Captain of a single starship wandering a detailed environment of solar systems, gradually gathering information and resources in order to defeat a mysterious and implacable enemy.
What it’s like
Hand-painted alien portraits and lush, painterly planet renders fill the screen against a deep starfield, with a sparse, bright soundtrack of synth-and-brass themes that swell over long stretches of quiet travel. The hand-drawn art has a warm, storybook quality, and the ship combat is a tactile, arcade-style melee of thrust, rotation and quick reflexes across 2D space. Its vibe is wistful wonder with a steady undercurrent of dread, a sense of drifting alone across a vast map and slowly learning what the cosmos is hiding. It suits long, unhurried evening sessions, a patient Sunday with a controller, or a stretch of time you can spend mapping star systems one at a time. Pacing is leisurely and exploratory, with the rhythm set by travel, conversation and sudden bursts of combat. The emotional register stays earnest and curious, following a lone captain who grows from a stranger among odd species into someone trusted by them. Violence is cartoonish, brief ship-to-ship skirmishes with no gore, and the tension comes from mystery rather than fear. It is for players who want a thoughtful, character-rich space adventure with gentle combat and a sense of discovery.
