The story

Steins;Gate 0 is a Japanese visual novel. It is the fifth game in the Science Adventure series and the sequel to Steins;Gate. Like Steins;Gate, the game is described as a "hypothetical science ADV". The player assumes the role of Okabe Rintaro in the β World Timeline.

What it’s like

Dim, cluttered rooms lit mostly by monitor glow, with chat windows and terminal text sliding across the screen, and bright anime character art sitting over grey, rain-streaked backdrops. The palette swings between warm lab clutter and washed-out, desaturated dread, so the mood darkens as the story goes on. The soundtrack leans on synth pulses and tense electronic beats that drop into near silence before a reveal, and the typing and clicking of interface sounds keep the pace taut. Reading is the main activity: long stretches of dialogue and internal monologue, with decisions that arrive in bursts and then quiet again. The vibe is anxious and paranoid, a late-night, sleepless unease with a stubborn, comic streak running through the banter. Violence and murder appear and weigh heavily on the characters, but the game mostly relies on dread, suspicion and emotional strain rather than gore, and some scenes are grim and disturbing. It suits a long evening alone, a patient playthrough, or fans of talky, twisty sci-fi who don't mind a bleak, tense tone.
