The story
Zero welcomes you to take part in both the Nonary Game and the Nonary Game: Ambidex Edition as the award-winning escape-the-room visual novels Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999) and its sequel, Virtue’s Last Reward (VLR), are together for the first time.
What it’s like
Clean, sterile rooms lit by hard fluorescent glare, with cold blue-white tones that warm into sickly amber whenever the story turns, and anime character art framed against flat, shadowed backgrounds. Pixel-sharp text boxes sit over static stills that shift in small, unsettling ways: a figure in a doorway, a drip of red light. The soundtrack moves between tense electronic pulses, piano stabs and long stretches of near silence broken by the clatter of a puzzle clicking into place. Its vibe is clinical dread with a puzzle-box fascination, the kind of thing that suits a late night alone with headphones on or a long-haul flight where you can pause to stare at a lock. Pacing is deliberately slow in the reading and sharp in the solving, with the emotional weight building through twisting revelations and nine strangers who slowly reveal the cost of trust. Intensity is moderate to high: frequent violence and a few brutal deaths, including grisly imagery and some sexual content, with fear that comes more from implication and betrayal than gore. For players who want a story-heavy escape room with branching endings, a bleak sci-fi mystery, and a steady sense of unease.
