The story
A crossover platform fighting game featuring characters from Nintendo franchises including Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, Pokémon, and Fire Emblem. Unlike traditional fighters, the goal is to knock opponents off the stage rather than deplete a health bar. Damage accumulates as a percentage, increasing the distance a character is launched when hit. Players use simple one-button inputs combined with joystick directions to execute moves. The game supports up to four players simultaneously and includes various single-player modes alongside its multiplayer focus. Its fast-paced, aggressive gameplay fostered a long-running competitive esports scene that persisted well beyond the game's original lifespan.
What it’s like
Bright, primary-coloured stages floating over bottomless pits, rendered in the crisp, cartoonish polygons of the GameCube era: Mushroom Kingdom castles, Hyrule ruins, and Corneria's sky-blue space all glow under clean, saturated light. The soundscape is a bouncy jumble of chiptune-derived themes, sudden victory fanfares, and the chatter of characters yelling their own names, with a lot of noise and very little silence. Sessions feel like a loud living room: four controllers, friends shouting, pizza crumbs, a dozen rapid-fire tussles in a single evening. Vibe is playful, kinetic and cheerfully chaotic, with a nostalgic fan-service warmth for anyone who grew up with Nintendo's cast. Pacing is fast and aggressive, with rounds ending in a sudden knockout off the edge and little downtime between bouts. Cartoon violence only: characters get flung, smacked and blasted in exaggerated, bloodless bursts, with no gore and no sexual content. Best for groups who want a rowdy, competitive party night, and for solo players who enjoy learning deep, rewarding techniques at their own pace.
