The story
Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the third installment in the Super Smash Bros. series and the follow-up to Super Smash Bros. Melee. This edition introduces super attacks referred to as final smashes, as well as a brand-new adventure mode in The Subspace Emissary which is a side-scrolling adventure in the style of a platformer. It retains all basic mechanics of the Super Smash Bros. series, such as a damage meter, stocks, and Smash-style attacks.
What it’s like
Bright, cluttered, and colourful, with Nintendo's characters rendered in a glossy Wii-era style against stages that shift from sunlit meadows to rain-slick cities and tilting mechanical decks. Sound is a constant swirl of familiar game music, sound effects, and crowd cheers, with the mood changing each time a stage's theme kicks in. The fighting moves at a fast, bouncy clip, but the pace drops during the story-driven Subspace Emissary, a side-scrolling platformer whose cutscenes and quieter stretches give the game a gentle, nostalgic register. Violence is cartoonish: characters are knocked off screen in bursts of colour, with no blood or gore, though the rougher tone of some villains and the fights against bosses add a little tension. Each stage is a playful sandbox in which mascots fling each other across the screen and comic chaos builds up. It suits a relaxed group night, a solo session of the adventure mode, or a long afternoon with friends who like minigames and quick party rounds, and it is for players who enjoy nostalgic characters and lively, friendly competition.
