The story

The Turtles and the Shredder battle once again, this time for the last cannister of the ooze that created the Turtles, which Shredder wants to create an army of new mutants. Meanwhile Splinter is coming... to a decision.

What it’s like

Bright, grimy early-nineties live-action look: sewer tunnels lit in murky green, daylight Manhattan rendered in flat, saturated primary colours, and rubber-suited creatures filmed under hot studio lights that give them a slightly plasticky sheen. Camera work is straightforward and unfussy, with wide two-shots for the slapstick and quick handheld jolts during the chase sequences, while the score leans on bouncy synth-rock and pounding drums that fill the fight scenes. The vibe is goofy, energetic and sugary, the sort of thing for a Saturday afternoon with the kids or a nostalgic rewatch with a bowl of cereal. Pacing is brisk and episodic, with frequent set-piece brawls, teasing one-liners and a pile-up of cartoonish villains. Emotional register stays light: the brothers squabble and bond, and their mentor's quiet presence gives the story a warm anchor. Violence is frequent but cartoon-stylised, with bodies that bounce, thud and flash away rather than bleed; there is martial-arts fighting, some peril and mild menace, and no sexual content or real gore. It suits families and fans of the franchise who want playful, low-stakes action with a sense of fun.
