The story

A satirical inversion of the ideal of the perfect American nuclear family, they are an eccentric wealthy family who delight in everything grotesque and macabre, and are never really aware that people find them bizarre or frightening. In fact, they themselves are often terrified by "normal" people.

What it’s like

Flat, bright studio-lit sitcom sets in soft black-and-white, with a gothic mansion that looks more like a stage set than a real house: cobweb-draped stairwells, a cluttered conservatory, a looming cemetery-facing lawn under a moonlit sky. The camera mostly holds on wide, centred multi-camera framings, letting the deadpan performers play in full figure, and the laugh track gives the whole thing a warm, retro stage-play rhythm. The score is brisk, spooky-jaunty organ and harpsichord, with a snap-finger swing that signals each punchline. Vibe: cheerfully macabre, dry and affectionate, a rainy-afternoon comfort rewatch or easy background while cooking on a Halloween weekend. Pacing is brisk and episodic, each story a tidy setup and reversal, while the central marriage and parent-child bonds stay warmly devoted. Intensity is very low: mock-menace, slapstick and wordplay, no real violence, no gore, nothing frightening beyond a theatrical shriek. Suits viewers who want gentle, gleefully odd comedy about a family that is more loving than the neighbours who fear them.
