The story

Amid a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife, is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war—and mankind itself.

What it’s like

Sun-bleached and grimy, with saturated neon bleeding into the night streets of Southeast Asian cities and vast, pale rice paddies and ruined temples stretching under open skies. Gareth Edwards shoots much of it with a loose, handheld intimacy that keeps the camera close to faces and makes the chaos of firefights feel physical, then cuts to serene, wide static frames of fields and floating villages that hold their breath. The score leans on low synth pulses and mournful strings, and the sound design is full of hums, drones and distant machinery, with stretches of near silence after the blasts. The mood is wistful and weary, a melancholy science-fiction road journey shaded with dread. The pacing alternates between slow, quiet passages and sudden, sharp action, and the emotional arc follows a grieving man slowly softening toward a small child who is not what he expected. The violence is frequent and often brutal, with gunfire, explosions and war-zone casualties, though there is little gore. Best for viewers who want thoughtful, melancholy sci-fi with strong atmosphere and can handle intense, war-style action.
