The story
Return to the world of Thra, where three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis' power and set out to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.
What it’s like
Craggy, jewel-toned landscapes rendered in handcrafted puppetry and detailed practical sets, with the warm amber glow of lanterns and fires set against cold, mossy stone and the bruised violet of a ruined world. The camera drifts through vast crumbling architecture and overgrown wilds with a patient, painterly sweep, and the creatures move with the uncanny weight of real materials, so the world feels tactile and strange rather than glossy. Sound leans on a swelling orchestral score, eerie wind and chanting, and the soft clicks and murmurs of the Skeksis and Gelfling. It is a slow-building, hopeful-but-grim story of young outsiders learning courage, with a few tense standoffs and an overall sense of wonder edged with unease. The violence is moderate: scenes of menace, captivity and cruel authority, some creature combat and peril, but no gore. Best for fantasy lovers who want an atmospheric, puppet-driven adventure for a long evening, or family viewing for older children and adults who enjoy dark fairy tales.
