The story

The exploits of the Grim Reaper, who has been forced into being the best friend of two children. A spin-off of the show Grim & Evil.

What it’s like

Bright, flat cartoon colour with bold outlines and a deliberately cheap-looking, cut-paper energy: saturated primaries, chunky shadows, and backgrounds that snap between sleepy suburban pastel and lurid, hellish oranges and purples. Camera work is simple and snappy, with quick cuts, exaggerated squash-and-stretch and sudden zooms, while the sound leans on blaring cartoon sound effects, a jaunty, brassy theme and frequent silly voices. The vibe is gleefully irreverent, a deadpan goth sensibility that keeps poking at its own macabre premise. Its gags run fast and episodes are short, so it suits a lazy weekday afternoon, a comfort rewatch, or background noise while doing something else. Violence is constant but cartoonish: characters get smashed, sliced, exploded or sent to the afterlife and bounce back within seconds, with no real gore and no lasting harm. The emotional register is warm underneath the chaos, as a grumpy, overworked Grim slowly and grudgingly grows fond of the two kids he is stuck with. It is for people who want absurd, mischievous, low-stakes fun with a dark edge and no real menace.
