The story
Three young monsters — Ickis, Oblina and Krumm — attends an institute for monsters under a city dump and learn to frighten humans.
What it’s like
Gritty, grimy and slightly grotesque, with a hand-drawn Nickelodeon look that trades clean lines for sickly greens, murky browns and the grubby glow of a landfill after dark. The palette is saturated but unwholesome, the backgrounds crowded with junk and peeling paint, and the camera stays mostly locked in flat, cartoonish framings that let the grotesque designs do the work. Sound leans on bouncy, slightly off-kilter cartoon scoring, squelchy foley and big sour-note cues for every gag. The vibe is goofy, sticky-fingered and warm underneath, the kind of thing to put on for a lazy weekend morning, a sick-day rewatch or background while doing chores. Pacing is brisk and episodic, with short scenes and quick punchlines in each half-hour. Its emotional register is light and mischievous, with a steady undercurrent of friendship and the small anxieties of school and family life, as three misfit young monsters struggle to scare people and find where they belong. Intensity is low: slapstick bumps, gross-out humour and mild creepiness, with no real violence, gore or sexual content and no sustained fear. Good for kids and adults who want something cheerfully gross and gently funny, with a soft heart beneath the slime.
