The story

A young woman encounters a malevolent supernatural force while searching for her missing sister in Tokyo, a mean high school prank goes horribly wrong, and strange things begin happening in a Chicago apartment building.

What it’s like

Cold, washed-out blues and sickly greens fill this J-horror sequel, with flickering fluorescent corridors, dim apartment stairwells, and rain-slick Tokyo streets lit by vending machine glow. Shimizu favours static, unsettling framings that hold on empty rooms until something shifts in the background, and the stuttering, glitchy score and sudden, shrieking stings push the dread forward. Its vibe is eerie and disorienting, the sort of thing best watched late at night with the lights low and nothing else to distract. The pacing is fractured and jumpy, hopping between timelines and locations, while the emotional register stays chilly and detached, following a young woman who is pulled into the curse's orbit and a set of strangers who don't quite understand what's happening to them. Intensity is moderate: jump scares and creeping dread dominate, with some disturbing images and a few brief, sudden deaths, but little gore and no sexual content. It suits people who want atmosphere and creeping unease over gore, and who are happy to accept a confusing, loosely connected mystery for the sake of the mood.
