The story

64 years before he becomes the tyrannical president of Panem, Coriolanus Snow sees a chance for a change in fortunes when he mentors Lucy Gray Baird, the female tribute from District 12.

What it’s like

Sunlit and dusty, with washed-out Capitol pastels against the grimy, sun-bleached roads of the districts, and a lot of heat haze over the arena's scrubby woods. Ballads and folk guitar thread through the score, and Lucy Gray's songs carry much of the emotional weight. The pacing is unhurried in the first half, built on rooms full of tension, whispered deals and mentor-student sparring, then tips into a longer, more punishing arena section. Violence is present and sometimes sharp: children are killed in the Games, with some blood and a few lingering moments of cruelty, but the camera rarely lingers on gore. Its register is melancholic and morally uneasy, a slow study of a young man's ambition curdling. It suits a long evening when you want a stylish, character-driven dystopia rather than a fast action ride, and it's best for viewers comfortable with teen-targeted but grim material.
