The story

In a dystopian 1970s America, fifty teenage boys take part in a deadly annual walking contest, forced to maintain a minimum pace or be executed, until only one survivor remains.

What it’s like

Washed-out roadside greys and dusty asphalt under flat overcast skies, with long tracking shots that keep pace with boys trudging down an endless highway. The palette is muted and the sound is mostly footfalls, breath, wind, and the distant hum of the escort vehicles, with a sparse, tense score that rises when the threat of a bullet becomes real. The mood is bleak and claustrophobic, a slow dread that builds through exhaustion, with sudden flashes of brutal violence that land hard and quickly. Its emotional register is melancholy and tense, following a tentative friendship between two boys as they try to hold onto their humanity while the road grinds them down. Expect repeated executions, bloody gunfire, and scenes of cruelty and bullying, along with heavy themes of despair and suicide; it is not gentle. It suits a focused, late-night watch rather than background viewing. It is for viewers who want dystopian survival drama with a strong character core, grim and unsparing, where the pacing itself becomes part of the pressure.
