The story

Twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed, Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the United States and depend on each other for survival.

What it’s like

Grimy, sun-bleached Americana giving way to overgrown ruin: dust hanging in amber afternoon light, rain-streaked windows, flooded streets and the green swallowing of cities, all shot with a cinematic, grounded palette where greys and olive tones break into warm interior glow. Camera work is patient and often static, letting long takes linger on quiet domestic moments before the cut to sudden, close-quarters chaos. The score is restrained, mostly low strings and soft piano that swell at the right moments, with silence doing much of the work. The vibe is weary, tender and bleakly hopeful, the kind of dread that softens into unexpected warmth. Pacing is measured across episodes, with slow character-driven stretches broken by tense set pieces. Violence is frequent and sometimes brutal, with graphic gore, infected creatures and frightening sequences of fear; there is some sexual content and strong language. The emotional register is heavy, and the central arc follows a guarded, grieving man slowly learning to care for a wary teenager. Suited to viewers who want serious, emotionally weighted post-apocalyptic drama with real character depth, not gentle or light viewing.
