The story
The Last of Us Part II is an action-adventure game set five years after the events of The Last of Us. The player traverses post-apocalyptic environments such as buildings and forests to advance the story. They can use firearms, improvised weapons, and stealth to defend against hostile humans and cannibalistic creatures infected by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus. The game intermittently switches control between Ellie and Abby, and also briefly Joel in the opening sequence. The nimble nature of the player character introduces platforming elements, allowing the player to jump and climb to traverse environments and gain advantages during combat.
What it’s like
Overgrown city blocks, flooded suburbs, and autumn forests rendered in muted, rain-dulled greens and greys, with long stretches of hush broken by creaking wood and distant, unsettling clicks. Sparse guitar and banjo from Gustavo Santaolalla surface at quiet moments, and the sound design, which earned an award, makes footsteps, scavenging, and the infected feel close and specific. The pacing alternates slow, tense exploration and stealth with sudden, scrambling combat, and the controls give the hands a jumpy, deliberate weight. Its tone is heavy and melancholy, a revenge story about grief, anger, and the cost of holding on, told through two characters whose perspectives keep tightening around each other. Expect very graphic violence, gory close-up kills, dread and cruelty, frequent sexual and brutal content, and emotional scenes that hit hard. It suits a late-night, headphones-on session rather than anything gentle, and is for players who want a bleak, character-driven story with a strong sense of place.
