The story
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Master Quest is a reworked version of the original Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo 64. Master Quest contains largely the same content as the original game but with more redesigned and difficult dungeons. Master Quest was available on a special bonus disc that also contained the original Ocarina of Time, it was given out in limited quantities with preorders of The Wind Waker. It was previously developed to be released as an expansion to the original game via the Nintendo 64DD, but that version was cancelled due to the lackluster sales of the hardware.
What it’s like
Warm, chunky low-poly worlds rendered in soft painterly textures: sunsets bleed orange across wide, grassy fields, while the Lost Woods and the Water Temple sink into cool green and blue murk. The camera trails the hero from behind and swings in close during dungeon puzzles, so rooms feel like handmade toy boxes to climb through. Sound is central, with a wandering ocarina melody, plucked harp and gentle strings for villages, and a low, pulsing hum in the dark corridors. The vibe is nostalgic, patient and quietly tense, suited to a long afternoon with the controller, a late-night session alone, or a return visit to a familiar land. Pacing is deliberate, with long traversal stretches broken by sharp, brainteasing rooms; the reworked dungeons make old routes feel newly hostile. Intensity is mild: sword combat against skeletal warriors and shadowy beasts, with tense boss fights and jump scares but no gore, blood or sexual content. Its arc follows a young hero growing up through hardship and loss. Made for veterans who want a sterner challenge, puzzle lovers, and anyone who enjoys classic fantasy adventure.
