The story

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD is a Wii U enhanced remaster of the original game. It features graphical upgrades from the original version, higher resolution and minor gameplay changes.

What it’s like

Soft, painterly fields under a grey-gold sky give way to dim, mossy forests and the cold blue-violet of twilight realms, with the Wii U's HD remaster sharpening textures without flattening the original's smudgy, atmospheric haze. Light is mostly dappled or overcast, and the camera hangs back over-the-shoulder so landscapes feel vast and lonely. Horseback rides across open plains are long and unhurried, punctuated by a steady, orchestral score with mournful strings and the occasional bright horn call, while quieter village and ranch scenes carry gentle ambient birdsong and creaking wood. The mood is wistful and quietly melancholy rather than grim, with a slow, exploratory rhythm built around dungeon puzzles, careful sword and bow combat, and collecting things in the open world. Violence is stylised and fairly mild: enemies fall in puffs of light and there is no gore, though some boss fights and shadowy creatures add a flicker of tension. It suits a rainy afternoon, a long evening with headphones, or a comfortable return to a familiar world, and it is best for players who enjoy patient exploration, puzzle-solving and a sad-but-hopeful fairy-tale atmosphere.
