The story

Two lighthouse keepers try to maintain their sanity while living on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.

What it’s like

Stark black-and-white photography in a boxy 1.19:1 frame, with the image pressed close around its two men: heavy shadows, blown-out white glare off the sea, and an oppressive, claustrophobic texture that makes the rocky island feel like a cell. The sound is as deliberate as the image, with foghorn drones, howling wind, creaking timber and dense, sudden noise swelling beneath near silence. Its vibe is feverish, sun-starved unease: slow, dread-soaked and increasingly hallucinatory, with the rhythm of a stormy night that never quite breaks. Two lonely men in a suffocating routine drift toward paranoia, mutual resentment and something stranger, and the mood darkens steadily rather than building to a clean release. Violence is sudden and bloody in short bursts, along with some graphic bodily grotesquerie and brief sexual content; the fear is psychological and the horror lands more through atmosphere than gore. This is for viewers who want a late-night, uneasy, visually bold film that rewards close attention and doesn't offer comfort.
