The story

Beginning in a time of relative peace, we follow an ensemble cast of characters as they confront the re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

What it’s like

Sweeping New Zealand-shot landscapes do most of the work here: dense ancient forests in cool green-gold light, the pale marble and sea-blue glow of Númenor, and dim, smoke-brown dwarven halls lit by forge orange and torchlight. The camera favours wide establishing shots and crane moves over the sssudden cutting of the bigger blockbusters, and the digital finish is glossy and saturated, with CGI vistas that sometimes look painted. Howard Shore's Middle-earth themes are echoed in Bear McCreary's sweeping orchestral score, with drums and choral swells rising over battle sequences and quieter strings under the slower character moments. The vibe is earnest, adventurous and wistful, with a warm, stately pace that lingers on travel, lore and quiet exchanges between strangers. Characters drift toward and away from one another, and several carve out their own paths of courage, doubt and self-discovery across the seasons. Violence is present and fairly regular: swordfights, arrows, troll and orc attacks, and some moments of dread and peril, but little gore and nothing explicit. It suits a long rainy weekend marathon or a comfort rewatch for viewers who love big fantasy worldbuilding and don't mind a slower burn.
