The story

A behind-the-scenes look at the people who make a nightly cable-news program. Focusing on a network anchor, his new executive producer, the newsroom staff and their boss, the series tracks their quixotic mission to do the news well in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles-not to mention their own personal entanglements.

What it’s like

Bright, fluorescent newsroom light and glossy, shallow-focus desks, with the camera gliding through long walk-and-talk tracking shots down corridors and across a busy control room. The palette is cool and corporate, with blue monitors, grey carpet and sharp suits, warmed only occasionally by late-night office lamps. Sound is dense and fast: overlapping dialogue, ringing phones, a bustling bullpen, and a brisk, slightly anxious underscore that surges when the on-air clock is counting down. Its vibe is brainy, restless idealism, the energy of a workplace that feels both urgent and a little absurd. It suits a weeknight with a glass of wine, or a binge that sweeps you along rather than lets you drift. Pacing is quick and talky, with verbal sparring, lectures delivered at speed, and a steady rhythm of live broadcasts and crises. The emotional register swings between sharp comedy and earnest sincerity, following a jaded anchor slowly reconnecting with his conscience and a team learning to work together under pressure. Intensity is moderate: frequent raised voices and workplace stress, some profanity and sexual innuendo, and romantic tension, but no graphic violence. For viewers who enjoy witty, fast-talking drama about media, politics and the people behind the headlines.
