The story

A world-weary college professor is given a life-changing diagnosis and decides to throw all pretense and conventions to the wind and live his life as boldly and freely as possible with a biting sense of humor, a reckless streak and a touch of madness.

What it’s like

Sharp, talky comedy-drama with a restless, anarchic energy, the kind of film that suits a late evening with a drink in hand rather than a relaxed family night. Its mood swings between mordant wit and melancholy, with a reckless streak that keeps the darkness from settling into sadness. Substance use, drinking and flashes of unhinged behaviour are part of its texture, and the terminal-illness thread gives the jokes an undertow of mortality. Expect a middle-aged man who has grown weary of polite pretence, slowly shedding his restraint and turning irreverent and volatile as the stakes sharpen, while the people around him react with exasperation, affection and worry. The intensity is moderate and conversational rather than violent or graphic, though its madness can feel abrasive. It is for viewers who enjoy caustic, adult humour, flawed protagonists who refuse to be tidied up, and stories about facing the end with more defiance than dignity.
