The story
When undercover FBI agent Frank Castle's wife and son are slaughtered, he becomes 'the Punisher' -- a ruthless vigilante willing to go to any length to avenge his family.
What it’s like
Grimy, saturated urban nights with sodium-orange streetlight, rain-slick asphalt and cold blue shadows, shot in a loud, kinetic style that leans on sharp cuts, handheld drift during the set pieces and close, sweaty faces under harsh practical light. Gunfire is punctuated by a heavy, percussive score and a lot of hard rock and guitar, so the soundtrack hits like a blunt object. The vibe is pulpy, brooding and very 2000s comic-book grit, with a tongue-in-cheek streak in the villain's theatrics that keeps it from feeling wholly grim. Pacing is brisk and escalating, with a revenge-driven arc in which a shattered family man sheds the last of his restraint and becomes a one-man weapon. Intensity is high: frequent gunfights and brutal, bloody close-quarters violence, stabbings and beatings, some crude language, and a cruel, menacing antagonist, though there is no sexual content. It suits a late-night action watch or a loud, no-nonsense afternoon with friends. It is for viewers who want sustained shootouts, moody crime-drama texture and an antihero who does not pull punches.
