The story

When a young girl stows away on the ship of a legendary sea monster hunter, they launch an epic journey into uncharted waters — and make history to boot.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated CGI animation with a painterly sheen: sunlit blue water, sails catching warm daylight, and wide ocean vistas that open into sweeping, awestruck views of the sea. The ship interiors are cluttered and lived-in, all timber, rope and lanterns glowing amber against dark wood, while the monsters are rendered with scale and texture that make them feel genuinely enormous. The score is full and orchestral, swelling for set pieces and softening into warm, intimate passages between characters. Pacing is brisk and buoyant, with action beats that are exciting but never sustained for long, and the emotional arc follows a spirited orphan and a gruff captain slowly learning to trust one another. Violence is present, with monster battles and cannon fire, but it is cartoonish and bloodless, and the peril feels adventurous rather than frightening. The overall register is cheerful and optimistic, suited to a family movie night, a lazy weekend afternoon, or anyone wanting a big, sunny seafaring adventure. It is for viewers who enjoy old-fashioned swashbuckling energy, lush ocean scenery, and a warm, lighthearted tone.
