The story

Creatively unfulfilled and facing financial ruin, Nick Cage must accept a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of a dangerous superfan. Things take a wildly unexpected turn when Cage is recruited by a CIA operative and forced to live up to his own legend, channeling his most iconic and beloved on-screen characters in order to save himself and his loved ones.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated Mediterranean sunlight over sun-bleached villas, glossy resort pools and tidy hotel suites, shot in a polished, mainstream digital style with plenty of punchy wide-angle coverage and quick cuts when the action spills out. The palette runs warm and candy-coloured, with turquoise water, pastel interiors and the occasional neon-lit nightclub, and the soundtrack leans on bouncy pop and heavy genre cues that keep the energy upbeat. Its vibe is playful, self-aware and a little manic, the kind of thing to put on for a lively Friday evening or a relaxed weekend with friends. Pacing is brisk and cheerfully chaotic, with set pieces that escalate fast and gags that land on the beat. Emotionally it is warm and goofy, with a grumpy father-daughter thread and a middle-aged man rediscovering his nerve. Violence is frequent and cartoonish, with gunfights, fistfights and chases, but it reads as comic rather than grim; there is some strong language and drug-related menace, and no real gore or sexual content. It suits people who want an irreverent, star-driven action comedy that pokes fun at its own fame.
