The story
Sheriff's deputy Rick Grimes awakens from a coma to find a post-apocalyptic world dominated by flesh-eating zombies. He sets out to find his family and encounters many other survivors along the way.
What it’s like
Washed-out daylight and sun-bleached Georgia countryside give the early episodes a dusty, desaturated look, with hazy heat over empty highways, abandoned farmhouses and cramped camps lit by lantern glow and overcast grey. The camera often holds wide on landscapes and lingers in quiet interiors, while the score is sparse, with low strings and long stretches of wind and ambient hush broken by the groan and shuffle of the dead. Pacing is episodic and uneven: slow, talky stretches about shelter, food and who can be trusted give way to sudden, brutal set pieces. Gore is frequent and graphic, with zombie attacks, dismemberment and bloody killings, and the dread of being overrun is constant. Its emotional register is bleak and grief-heavy, with a tired, dogged feel and a long arc about a grieving man slowly losing his sense of what it means to stay human. It suits a late night alone or a weekend binge for people who want survival drama and horror with real stakes, and it does not suit anyone seeking something gentle.
