The story

Three years after the zombie virus has gutted the country, a team of everyday heroes must transport the only known survivor of the plague from New York to California, where the last functioning viral lab waits for his blood.

What it’s like

Gritty, sun-bleached road-trip apocalypse: wide desert highways under hard daylight, dusty pickups, rusted towns and cracked suburbs, with the grime and heat of a country that has been left to rot. The palette leans toward washed-out tans, rust and bruised grey-green, broken up by sudden splashes of practical gore and bright night scenes lit by headlamps and campfires. Camerawork is loose and kinetic, with handheld moves in the fights and expansive establishing shots of empty roads that make the distances feel real. The score mixes thumping rock and synth stingers with pulpy, tongue-in-cheek needle drops, so the mood often swings between tension and goofy fun. Pacing is episodic, each stop on the journey bringing a new encounter, and the tone stays brisk and self-aware rather than bleak. Zombie violence is frequent and graphic: dismemberment, blood, and jump-scare attacks, with some sexual innuendo and crude humour. It suits a binge with friends or a weekend of comfort-horror, for viewers who enjoy ensemble adventure and gory action more than slow dread.
