The story

Living his best life in post-apocalyptic LA, a slacker strives to find the girl of his dreams while outwitting mindless ghouls and cliquish gangs.

What it’s like

Saturated, sun-bleached Los Angeles under a hazy orange sky, with rubble-strewn streets, graffitied overpasses and neon-lit ruins that give the city a bright, comic-book sheen rather than a bleak one. The camera moves briskly and often sits close to its teenagers, cutting quickly between bits of slapstick and small romantic stumbles, while the score leans on punchy synth and guitar riffs. Its vibe is scrappy, goofy and upbeat, a teen adventure with a wink, best suited to a lazy weekend afternoon or a light binge with friends. The pace is brisk and episodic, and the emotional register stays playful, with the central boy's clumsy, hopeful attempts at romance and loyalty giving the show its heart. Intensity is moderate: there are regular zombie-like "ghouls" and scuffles, with gore and some blood but no sustained horror, and the fights are mostly cartoonish and quick. It suits viewers who want escapist, high-energy fun with a teen-comedy spin and don't mind a bit of mayhem, and it is a fit for fans of irreverent genre TV who enjoy visual flair over grimness.
